MESSAGE TO ARECIBO

DV, 07:32, 2016

In this short, sci-fi | experimental | archival doc genre blender, Terence McKenna pounders the potential for mushroom spores to be used as extraterrestrial probes disseminated throughout the universe in search of intelligent life.

The audience is treated to a quick, trippers-eye-view into the liquid landscape of one of the most fascinating minds of the psychedelic movement.

The moving imagery was produced by filtering original video recordings through a raster scanner, Dave Jones's custom-made Colorizer and Hearn Videolab, and Jason Bernagozzi and Dave Jones's Wobbulator during a residency at Signal Culture in Owego, New York in April/May 2015.

The soundscape is a combination of audio signals filtered through oscillators, frequency filters and waveform variants via a Doepfer analogue modular synthesizer; and field recordings taken in Hawaii of an invasive species of frogs – Puerto Rico’s loud and onomatopoetically named Coquis are mixed together with an audio excerpt from an untitled lecture that McKenna gave at a UFO Expo in LA in the early 90s.

Final audio mixing by Steve Terry.
